Seeing

The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible.
Oscar Wilde

Learn to see, and then you''ll know that there is no end to the new worlds of our vision.
Carlos Castaneda

Everyone takes the limits of his own vision for the limits of the world.
Arthur Schopenhauer

...the common eye sees only the outside of things, and judges by that, but the seeing eye pierces through and reads the heart and the soul, finding there capacities which the outside didn''t indicate or promise, and which the other kind couldn''t detect.

Seeing, being the dominant sense, must be attended to first.

What is it to see? A good place to start is the origin and evolution of the word to see. Used in Middle English to mean "behold in the imagination or in a dream" (c.1200). According to Wikipedia.org visual perception is the ability to interpret information and surroundings from visible light reaching the eye. The resulting perception is also known as eyesight, sight or vision. The various physiological components involved in vision are referred to collectively as the visual system.

We see only a narrow band of the electromagnetic spectrum. Hummingbirds and butterflies see into the ultra-violet spectrum. Imagine what physical phenomenon we miss from larger bands of the spectrum. Fortunately technology can allow us to see into these spectrum. Infra-red cameras, ultra-violet cameras, and x-ray machines enable us to see a broader range of "light."

The visual system in humans allows individuals to assimilate information from the environment. The act of seeing starts when the lens of the eye focuses an image of its surroundings onto a light-sensitive membrane in the back of the eye, called the retina. The retina is actually part of the brain that is isolated to serve as a transducer for the conversion of patterns of light into neuronal signals. The lens of the eye focuses light on the photoreceptive cells of the retina, which detect the photons of light and respond by producing neural impulses. These signals are processed in a hierarchical fashion by different parts of the brain, from the retina to the lateral geniculate nucleus, to the primary and secondary visual cortex of the brain.

So this is what is commonly understood to happen physically. Eyes which are part of the brain receive light and the visual cortex develops pattern recognition based on patterned light input. What we actually see is the mental patterns in our brain. You''ve never seen light directly in your life. So from the very beginning vision are symbols of light patterns. Our minds create a visual language as we mature and we become conscious of more and more complex light pattern symbols. Soon after birth common patterns begin resonating. Links with other, older members of the brain interact creating feedback loops of memory.

Glance into the world just as though time were gone: and everything crooked will become straight to you.
Friedrich Nietzsche

Now not only does light entering our eye produce mental light pattern symbology but our imagination is inspired by these symbols and begins to create mental imagery not sourced from incoming light. Millions of electromagnetic patterns reverberating, harmonically. Soon these images intermix sometimes to the extreme that a person cannot differentiate between physical imagery and imagined imagery. For the majority of people a balanced feedback loop is developed between physical sight symbols and self-created imagery. A free-flow of imagery with self-honesty of the sources of these images is the goal.

The hardest thing to explain is the glaringly evident which everybody had decided not to see.
Ayn Rand

Habitual believers who refuse to see what is plainly in front of them CANNOT create a high frequency feedback loop with their sight, and mental imagery. Always they attempt to force their own fantastic beliefs to be seen physically. This severs the loop. One must dissolve belief and expectation and just see and naturally ones feelings and imagination will ebb and flow, organically growing the sense of sight.

Attending to a active action of seeing every moment of every day is a method to free yourself from belief, image sickness (depression), guilt, and manipulation. Just see now. New feelings will naturally arise....Allow these feelings to rise up and form your own individual ideas and imagery. Don''t try to stop believing, fearing, being guilty...all these parasitic image forms will starve from lack of attention if you turn your gaze to the wondrous world around you. Even a simple blade of grass seen with a clear mind is an amazing creation worthy of libraries of words.

Samuel Ichiye Hayakawa, who authored Language in Thought and Action, understood a profound idea. The symbol is not the thing. Seems simple enough, right? I have found that many people are not familiar with this concept and have not integrated it though their thought structure. The word is not the thing, the map is not the land. The mental symbolic light pattern is not the thing either. There is no thing. There is only a thing observed because we create arbitrary boundaries based on the light reflecting of the bodies. In reality all physical bodies are just a foci of resonant energy patterns which radiates outwards forever.

The goal of Synthesensitivity is to sense the entire unified field (universe) without boundaries by the integration of the visual sense with all others including feeling, emotion, and thought.

I look for what needs to be done. After all, that''s how the universe designs itself.
R. Buckminster Fuller
