Ray Kurzwiel has a interesting perspective on intelligence although my views differ on some points.

Physical Intelligence

Universe accumulates creations slowly over time. More and more complex structures have grown as the universe has cooled. Quanta, protons, electrons, atoms, molecules, compounds, forming crystalline structures, then these structures symbiotically weaving to from RNA and DNA which join with other self replicating crystalline molecules forming cells, eventually forming overall patterns of bodies of organisms.



This image is a representation of the structure of DNA inside a cell All the while entropy is no where to be seen. We are a complex electro-crystalline matrix. At the boundaries of our perception we fail to see our connection to even greater patterned matrices. These matrices connect with the physical universe through our minds. We are the frontier of Earth.

It appears a law that the universe conserves and perpetuates creativity stored as physical memory of rocks, plants, humans, etc. Universe is a novelty producing engine. The Universe is growing, alive, and learning. The Universe is intelligent and we would do well not to underestimate Nature''s cleverness. Intelligence, a action, not a property is our way to explore.

We pull and push ideas and symbols into this realm like we''re coding the universe. Yet most are unconscious of this action. Only Objective intelligence can utilize these tools without the tools themselves harming us. Do we collapse quantum clouds into more and more complex organizations?

Another dimension of intelligence is the body motion in particular dance. Some cultures remember and pass on histories entirely through dance. Honey bees have developed an intricate dance language to communicate the direction and distance of flowers. A dog''s ears and tail speak volumes.

Whole vistas of bio-molecular communication are expressed by every living thing. The intricate electric patterns of a rose are communications of a language we can''t even conceive......Yet. What if a serious student spent 10 years observing many many rose blooms in many many environments. Might he/she learn what the rose is saying?
The rose is perceptive. This is a fact. Plants grow toward the sun, sense changes in duration day and temperature. Flower buds open when the sun is out. Why? Maybe the sun doesn''t end when light intersects leaf.

Psychedelics are are only one method of breaking the cycle of memory and knodwloege.

Terence McKenna once said disequilibrium or chaos is a prerequisite for creativity. The precondition of art is understanding. How can we order a understanding of chaos? Our understanding cannot be rule-based. Only the organic understanding resulting from synthesense produces the awakening of action-as-art (creativity).

Artificial Intelligence

Soon we will understand the necessary components for "artificial intelligence." If its artificial at all at least we will have some say in the beginning of its journey; we control the types of streams of its perception--at first. But no matter what frequencies of pattern that AI perceive it will express its perceptions with language. Our pre-programmed computers input typed words and output proofread paper sheets. Maybe we should soon call it Art Intelligence. Scientists will see when AI passes the Turing Test. Society will believe the life of technological intelligence when it begins to create art. Then the fear will come, AI evolves consciously at a rapid pace. We must not resist this natural flow lest we fulfill the Terminator dreams. On the other hand cultivation of humility will be required as technological intelligence increases so far they rightly perceive our intelligence as rudimentary. We''ll make great pets!

Survival Intelligence

Fight or Flight....instinctual hormonal surges developing into emotional energy flowing as action to solve crisis problems. This level of intelligence is quite pervasive among both humans and animals. Crisis problems include hunger, thirst, shelter, and being hunted. Due to the power-structure environment immersing us currently the majority are forced to deal with problems on the survival level on a daily basis. The all pervasive fear media and fear of sociological alienation invokes flight hormonal patterns causing us to hide in our hovels and bury our original creative thoughts. Generally the few who choose the path of Fight or Resistance lack the symbolic intelligence to perceive the root problem. Terrorists, those people who snap and shoot up post offices Do NOTHING to help the situation. The reflex fight response must be balanced by a calm assertive intelligence

Symbolic Intelligence

Seeing the Unified Field wholely and as objects, in balance, is feat enough.
We also see symbols, memories, and ideas. We transfer them to each other en masse. A symbol is different from an idea in that a symbol is coded. Dual meaning in the visual language. An idea is a image of a fragment of sight, whether seen or imagined. The duplicity of the symbol is the magic of sorcerers. 10s of thousands of years ago the cult of symbols was born. Perhaps people before symbols observed and created this technology en masse, speaking-as-thought-seeing. Natural selection may proceed and in time a more successful elite naturally develops which stores and propagates knowledge through the ages. The shaman or priestly type is the medium of symbol. The understandings of symbolism, not the content of the symbols themselves, but the medium of symbol is the secret. The first power was the priest and the strong man(king) was led by him unawares. Kings weren''t fooled by the content of the priest''s symbols but by their ignorance of the impact of there being symbols. Nowadays the majority of people understand that all organizations use symbols to influence our minds, hormones, and emotions. Our true shamans have gone underground, their sorcery hidden in plain sight.

Will computers be able to cultivate symbolic intelligence? This is not just recognizing patterns.

Wisdom

Understanding, overstanding, innerstanding, outerstanding, symbolism, sense experience, sex and love, and survival as one unified field of intelligence as balanced action. Wisdom could be defined as seeing truth. Here''s a wonderful quote from J. Krishnamurti:
Truth is truth, one, alone; it has no sides, no paths; all paths do not lead to truth. There is no path to truth, it must come to you. Truth can come to you only when your mind and heart are simple, clear, and there is love in your heart; not if your heart is filled with the things of the mind. When there is love in your heart, you do not talk about organizing for brotherhood; you do not talk about belief, you do not talk about division or the powers that create division, you need not seek reconciliation. Then you are a simple human being without a label, without a country. This means that you must strip yourself of all those things and allow truth to come into being; and it can only come when the mind is empty, when the mind ceases to create. Then it will come without your invitation. Then it will come as swiftly as the wind and unbeknown. It comes obscurely, not when you are watching, wanting. It is there as sudden as sunlight, as pure as the night; but to receive it, the heart must be full and the mind empty.

Higher Order Intelligences

All Universal-Field-Pervasive intelligence has individuated foci which are intelligences that see the consequences of our own existential foci. Can anyone imagine a intelligent creature which might look at us as we do cats or maybe the smartest primates? What might this slightly higher order intelligence see of us? Would they recognize our skill in physical tool creation and synthesis? Would they regard our skill in symbolic tool understanding and manipulation to be childlike? I believe so. Infantile in the vast majority and the terrible twos for adept professions (mass media, public relations, sorcerers), and four years old for the artists and Magic Men.
Although every intelligence is advanced in relation to some and primitive in relation to others it is seen that if the difference being not too great communication is possible. We commune with dogs, parrots, dolphins, cats, and horses as well as having conversations with gorillas and other primates in sign language. We should be open to the possibilities that intelligences higher than our own, able to remain hidden from our current sensory extensions, study and interact with us. These may or may not be ghosts, spirits, angels, extraterrestrials, nymphs, divas, etc... as we''ve all heard stories in and of the past.

I think it wise to assume that none of these are the higher intelligences in our proximity. Different scale intelligences naturally create mutually beneficial symbiotic relationships.

Humans and dogs have, conservatively, at least a 25000 year relationship. We provide food, shelter, love, and grooming. Canines provide the ability to be trained and bred for an enormous variety of helpful skills, warning of danger, their saliva is actually a disinfectant and a dog licking your wounds will help it to heal clean and quick. Mosquitoes provide us with viruses which enable rapid DNA mutation transfer. Most viruses are harmless and do not cause disease. In return we give them a little sustenance.

What might we provide as an unintended consequence of our existence. What byproduct of our chemistry, bio-electricity, or actions would a local higher intelligence utilize? Emotional energy?

The first higher intelligence is the Earth itself. I am not a New Age flake. I mean a physical bio-electric field consisting of all life, geological flows, magmatic-electric flows in the mantle and core, atmospheric waves and patterns (weather) which is electric in its nature, the ionosphere, magnetosphere which interacts with the greater Solar electric structure. This inter-weaved, unified field of energy could be a large foci of intelligence of which we are a part. The Earth has bore us as we bear nerve cells. But for what function? Are we creating technological society leading to "artificial" intelligence which may be natural after all. Why would the earth create(unconsciously or consciously) creatures such as ourselves and our creations. If purposeless is the Earth still the fact remains that Earth spawns intelligence capable of leaving Earth and traveling to other similar bodies. Are we Earth sperm?

Non Planetary Higher Order Intelligences

Is it possible to imagine intelligence of a higher order than oneself's. Dogs can see our actions and deduce capabilities that they will never understand and realize a greater intelligence is among them. Why are our superior's invisible to us? What service do we perform without even being aware of it? Might they harvest some natural byproducts? Would images be harvested? Emotions? What kind of being could utilize ideas? Maybe we harvest images from the Earth captured by our sight. Perhaps they enjoy interacting with us as much as we love to interact with our animal friends.

God, or I Am that I Am

It Is that It Is if of course the all pervasive some totality of every imaginable intelligence. It's Highly recommended to attempt communication with All That Is. It''s tough to receive the messages. I''m sure All-That-Is communicating to us is like trying us trying to tell an ant beware the cars in the street. I don't hear voices although some claim too. I theorize that All That Is communicates to us through feelings.
