Right now we are in the middle of a complex, thriving galactic ecosystem. It is possible that humanity's DNA is a branch from an ancestor on a planet near here. An ancient human ancestor might have stemmed hundreds of branches scattered across thousands of solar systems. All of these branches of humanity will have intermingled with other branches of DNA less similar to our own. Millions of species; large and small, plant-like and free-moving(animal), microscopic and self-aware, or of configurations we are unaware are intermixing as the multitude of species do in the jungles of South America.
